A post hole digger is a tool used to dig small holes in the ground. The tool comprises two shovel-like edges attached to the ends of the longitudinal pipes. The body is a set of two V-shaped metal blades each having inwardly turned edges portions extended on a common side of plates (blades), the metal blade has the right angle inward bend flange which forms a hollow cylinder. It can dig up to 36 inches to a foot long and a few inches wide, the two handles (pipe) can open and close to remove the soil. 

They are generally used to dig for signposts, fences, landscaping, and digging small holes. 

The tool stabbed into the ground making a puncture with the blades in an open position( parallel). The pipe or handles are then brought closer to create V-shape which is its close position, thus the blades grab the soil in between them and lastly, the tool is pulled out along with the soil deposited by its sides.

Traditional post hole digger

Traditional post hole digger is one of the simplest in design, they are the authentic mechanical instrument, it comprises two steel blades confronting each other, affiliated at the pivot point. The steel structure is then joined to the handles. They are ideal for simple small functions.

Double pivot 

This digger is the same as a traditional digger but, rather of one pivot point, it has two. One extra pivot alters its working mechanism, instead of pulling the steels apart, they are pushed together to clamp the soil in the ground. 

They are used to dig narrow and deep holes, the extra pivot restricts the blades to open too wide which eliminates the handle's limitations during the process. 

Scissor action digger 

As the name suggests its design is similar to the pair of scissors. In this type, the design has extra strength because the blades are welded to the steel tube rather than wooden handles, it restrains the end of the handles and results in strengthening and making them the best post hole diggers. They are well suited to work in rocky soil, due to the extra vitality, there is less risk of the welded blades to come off or break. 

Offset post hole digger

It has the most unique design among all the types, as it has straight handles placed close together which offset at the top. 

The peculiar structure allows us to dig a deeper and narrower hole, also it requires less force while closing the blades. 

Universal post hole digger

This digger has a very different appearance compared to other types, till now all diggers had

handles of the same size but, it has two handles of different sizes and shapes. One is short and bends while the other is much extended and straight. Like its design, its function is different as well; one blade pierces the ground and dislocates the soil before the second blade is pivoted down by the handles to collect and remove the soil.
